Poetry Event in Vancouver

Downtown Eastide Writers, here’s a opportunity for participation in a literary event. If you are interested, please contact the volunteer coordinator below.

The Griffin Prize is Canada’s most generous poetry prize, awarding $200,000 to 7 finalists and 2 “winners”. One of this year’s finalists, Jan Zwicky, lives on Quadra Island, BC. The Griffin Vancouver event is the first-ever partner event to occur. We will be showing a live broadcast of the awards event in Toronto and celebrating our own writers and poets. Reading at the Griffin Vancouver event will be Vancouver Poet Laureate Evelyn Lau, Matt Rader, Marita Dachsel, Jen Currin, and Zaccheus Jackson Nyce. There will be food and music and raffle prizes! Admission is by donation, with nobody turned away for lack of funds.

We’re looking for a couple of people to help with set up during the day (12-4 pm) on June 7th, and for coat check, bussing, and clean up the night of the event. Shifts will generally be 5-9 pm and 6-10/11 pm, but we can accommodate people if they can’t stay that long. Shifts may also be shorter depending on the number of volunteers we have. The evening work will have busy times during the start and end of the evening, but during the main portion (when the local writers are reading) we anticipate there won’t be much to do except enjoy the event.

All volunteers will get food and a beverage ticket. If anybody would like a letter of reference we would be happy to provide one.
