Interval, a CBC radio doc
Journalist Pamela Post followed our progress with Voice to Voice and had a chance to interview many of the participants over the course of several months. Her 40+ hours of tape were a gold mine – she said she had enough to serve for eleven documentaries. As she came to know the writers and the ethos of the project she was faced with the work of editing down a massive story to just 16 minutes for the CBC national radio show, The Current.
She crafted an experience of the Voice to Voice project as told through the progress of one writer, Henry Doyle. The radio doc combines footage of all of us in class writing together, (you can hear Donna Dykeman reading one of her excellent poems!), excerpts of the premiere concerts at UBC School of Music and the moment Henry Doyle and composer Lucas Oickle first meet. Throughout the latter half you can hear the tremendous performance of Henry and Lucas’ piece by tenor Spencer Britten and pianist Yekaterina Utegenova.
While it was tough for many of the writers who were excited to share their views and opinions not to hear their voices in the doc we all agree we are proud of Henry and thrilled he was able to represent us so capably. Many of the writers sent notes of excitement, sure that this will be a great thing for him individually and us collectively.
I do want to mention that the writers in the Collective are dedicated, resilient and tenacious – qualities that make them the “likeliest” of artists. As well, many of them have university degrees, in some cases specialized technical and graduate degrees. Educational experiences, like all other aspects of our backgrounds, are varied! That said, we are very happy to share this window into our experience via Henry Doyle with you.
