Sustain and Nourish

We begin our next project, Sustain and Nourish, on September 17, 2pm-4pm at Carnegie Community Centre in Vancouver, BC.

This year-long project is about food. We will read texts about food, write about feasts and favourite foods, question the distribution of food in the neighbourhood, write recipes for living in the Downtown Eastside, look at urban foraging, write about the politics of food and the body (whose body gets what food, for example) and think about how we sustain and nourish each other.

We’ll visit Hives for Humanity at the Hastings Garden and talk with First Nations herbalist Cease Wyss. Throughout the year we are planning evenings of Literary Verses and Courses, where we serve poetry and food.

We’ll be working in tandem with Vancouver poet laureate Rachel Rose within her three year food-based project and collaborating with a host of writers and food-producers. We also hope to exchange ideas with Gender Studies students at SFU with Lucas Crawford, perform public readings at the Food Bank, create an anthology chapbook in the form of placemats.
