New Library Seeks Art

The nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona neighbourhood library branch is the first building in Vancouver to have a First Nations name. Click here to learn how to pronounce this Musqueam word meaning “we are one”.

Here’s an update from librarian and coordinator Beth Davies:

Work on the nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Branch continues, and the library is beginning to take shape. The concrete has been poured for the parking level and the first floor, and the second floor walls are going up. If you peer through the hoardings at 730 East Hastings, you can see the double height main library space; from the alley, you can clearly see the windows of our large multipurpose program room. Earlier this week, VPL and the City of Vancouver’s Public Art department put out a call for a public art opportunity at the entrance to the nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Branch. For details, see http://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/artist-call-for-strathcona-branch-library.aspx.

 

I’d also like to introduce Jorge Cardeñas, who is working as a community librarian on the nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Branch until December this year. Jorge has already met with some of you, and is keen to connect with more community members this fall. His goals are to let you know about the new library, and to invite input into the books, other collections and programs you’d like to see there.
