| V6A in V6Y + Rice Paper Magazine: Aboriginal & Asian Canadian WritersSunday May 5, 12:00pm-4:00pm Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate Free, Family, AccessibleAs part of Asian Heritage Month we invite you to an afternoon with a double reading from V6A: Writing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (Arsenal Pulp Press: 2012) + Rice Paper Special Aboriginal and Asian Canadian Writers Issue Winter 2012. V6A is the postal code prefix for Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, an area challenged by poverty-related issues and maligned as “the poorest postal code in Canada.” But the Downtown Eastside (DTES) is also beloved by residents for its optimism, community ties and heterogeneity. V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is an anthology of creative writing by 32 people who have been a part of the DTES community in some way, at some point in their lives. Published by Arsenal Pulp Press, this map of a moment in the DTES’ creative life reappropriates the code and allows a community to define itself, on its own terms. Edited by Elee Kraljii Gardiner and John Asfour, shortlisted for the city of Vancouver book award. Ricepaper magazine is a Canadian magazine which has covered Asian Canadian literature, culture, and the arts since 1994. The Aboriginal and Asian Canadian issue is the first ever special double issue, with 96 pages with features, reviews, poetry, and prose from writers across Canada. Featuring Joanne Arnott, Jim Wong-Chu, Alan Hill, Elee Kraljii Gardiner, Jonina Kirton, Elaine Woo, Patrick Foley, Henry Doyle; other readers to be confirmed. Readers from V6A will open the event after which there will be a short break before the Ricepaper readers take the mic. Refreshments provided. Tonight, Oct 30, 2012, at 7pm we are invited to the Kerrisdale Public Library for Postal Code Readings: V6A in V6M.
The reading features contributors James McLean, Antonette Rea, Michael Turner, Henry Doyle, Elaine Woo and Rachel Rose for a reading of their pieces from V6A.
It will be held in the Millie Cartwright Room in the Kerrisdale Seniors Centre, which is part of the Kerrisdale Community Centre Complex (Seniors is on the west end of the Complex) If you are driving, parking is in the Kerrisdale Community Centre Parking Lot and we suggest you park at the west end of the lot. You will be closer to the Seniors Centre, and there’s a door right into the Seniors Centre on the west end of the Complex. Busses run along 41st; get off at East Boulevard.

The Postal Code readings have been a moving experience. We appreciate the warm reception from the audience in New Westminster.
Tonight, we head to V6R for the third in a series of Postal Code Readings from the anthology V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.Writers Jonina Kirton, Henry Doyle, Angela Gallant, My Name is Scot, Irit Shimrat and Muriel Marjorie will share their poetry, prose and memoir and hold conversation with the host neighbourhood, West Point Grey (V6R), about local issues and the writing life.

V6A is launching in Montreal on Tuesday, June 12, 2012! The time changed to 7:30-9;30pm.
Editors John Asfour, who lives in Montreal, and Elee Kraljii Gardiner, from Vancouver, will be reading excerpts from V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside on behalf of contributors. Afterwards we’ll host an informal discussion about neighbourhoods and community issues that affect both cities. We’d like to invite community writing groups to attend and contribute to a discussion after the reading. If you or a group you are affiliated with would like to hear from our literary community in Vancouver and have a conversation about similarities and differences with Montreal, please join us!
We are also celebrating the launch of the Yellow Door reading Series host Ilona Martonfi’s second poetry book, “Black Grass,” (Broken Rules Press, 2012). Ilona is the author of Blue Poppy (Coracle, 2009) and a teacher and editor. She is the founder, producer and host of The Yellow Door & Visual Arts Centre Readings and the co-founder Lovers and Others. Thank you to Ilona for the warm welcome to Quebec! Milton Dawes will be playing djembe throughout the evening rather than accompanying Ilona as she reads.
