We return on Thurs, Sep 18, 2014 to write together from 2pm-4pm at Carnegie Community Centre.
We meet every Thursday until Dec 11, 2014 when we break for winter holidays.
On Sep 18, 2104 Laura Barron is coming to write with us and speak to us about her role in Voice to Voice.
On Sep 25, 2014 UBC composers interested in collaborating with us are welcome to come write with us.
On Oct 16, 2014 Elee is away and Molly Skye Ancel, our excellent co-captain, is facilitating.
On Saturday, Nov 8th, the COMPOSERS attend an optional Collaborative Skills workshop from 12:30-3:30 with Rup Sidhu and Laura Barron at UBC, Music Building, room 304.
On Saturday Nov 15, 2014, from 11-1pm in our classroom the WRITERS will have a special workshop on collaboration and communication run by Rup Sidhu with Elee in attendance.
Thursday, Nov 20, our regular class takes place at St James Church at 303 Cordova St & Gore. Pianist Rena Sharon and soprano Bahareh Poureslami will demo some art song pieces and chat with us from 2:30-3:30pm.

This fall we will be continuing The Stanza Project, a process of writing about space, both poetic and architectural. We will be publishing a journal of our findings. See below for deadlines. Unless otherwise noted all dates below are Thursdays and regular class days!

Wed, Nov 7 – Launch of Thursdays Writing Collective exhibit at Liu Institute for Global Issues. Info on our month-long exhibit is here. The exhibit will include photos and videos of our work as well as copies of our publications. The opening begins with a night of social writing based on the ideas of access and social responsibility. We hope to have as many DTES residents, Thursdays Writing Collective participants, Westside residents, UBC alumni and students as possible. Everyone is welcome to this free event. Please join us for an hour of raucous writing and snacks! Everyone will be welcome to contribute their writing from the evening to a collective archive of the exhibit that will remain on site and possibly represented in the Stanza Project publication forthcoming in 2013.

April 12, 2012- John Asfour is our guest reader. He’ll be speaking about his 5th book, “Blindfold,” (McGill-Queen’s University Press) Later that night, John and Elee Kraljii Gardiner host the launch of the anthology V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (Arsenal Pulp Press) which includes several Thursdays Writing Collective members and sales of which benefit the Collective. At the Waldorf Hotel, 1489 East Hastings St, 7-9pm, free and open to all.

We resume Thursday, September 15, 2011, 2-4pm at Carnegie Community Centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Join us every Thursday until December 8, 2011 for creative writing discussion and prompts. Classes are free and everyone is welcome to drop in.
This fall’s highlights include participating in the Word on the Street Festival on Saturday and Sunday September 24 and 25th, 2011. We will have a Thursdays Writing Collective table for the first time so please stop by and see us at Library Square on Robson Street.
Also, in November we’ll be launching the publication we created from the Writers Caravan project from springtime. That will happen in the first or second week of November at the Memory Festival at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver.

Course Eight Begins Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Carnegie Centre. Unless otherwise noted, Elee Kraljii Gardiner teaches each Thursday, 2-4pm. Each Thursday members of Thursdays Editing Collective are available after class beginning at 4pm to consult with participants on a first-come, first-served basis. On days with visits from Writers Caravan groups classes will proceed as normal, with a similar format.

Elee Kraljii Gardiner and assistant Anne Hopkinson are in the midst of the seventh Thursdays Writing Collective course which began Thursday, September 16, 2010 and runs until December 9th from 2-4pm at the Carnegie Centre in Vancouver. This fall the course is marked with visits from writers Fiona Tinwei Lam, author of the poetry books, “Enter the Chrysanthemum,”and “Intimate Distances,” Cathleen With, author of “Having Faith in the Polar Girls Prison,” and “Skids,” George McWhirter, Vancouver’s first poet laureate, a translator and author of more than 17 books and his wife, educator Angela Mairead Coid, and Michael Turner, author of “8 x 10,” “Kingsway,” “The Pornographer’s Poem,” and “Hardcore Logo,” will also visit.

Oct 14 — Fiona Tinwei Lam on revision
Fiona Lam is the author of Intimate Distances, Enter the Chrysanthemum and is co-editor of the literary non-fiction anthology, Double Lives. Her work has been published in literary magazines Canada-wide and in more than 15 anthologies and has been featured on local transit as part of BC’s Poetry in Transit. She is currently editing an anthology of Canadian contemporary poetry about facing and surviving cancer.

Nov 4 – George McWhirter and Angela Mairead Coid on the writing life
George McWhirter, Vancouver’s first poet laureate, was born in Belfast in 1939 and taught creative writing at UBC for thirty-five years, He is the author of scores of books of poetry and prose and has translated several contemporary Mexican poets. Joining him is wife, Angela, an educator and writer.

Nov 25 – Cathleen With on voices
Cathleen With is the author of Skids, short stories about street kids on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, and the novel Having Faith in the Polar Girls Prison. Cathleen has worked as a social activist in Kathmandu, Calcutta, Cambodia and a teacher in Inuvik.
